Topic Overview: 

People leaders support team members in their development, performance, and transitions. In this interactive session, we will explore the role of managers in coaching others, address some of the challenges managers face when coaching team members, and identify opportunities to develop people leaders to coach others. Participants will leave with tools they can use as managers to coach others. Professional coaches will leave with an understanding of how they can support managers in coaching team members. 

In this interactive session, participants will:

  • Distinguish coaching from other managerial responsibilities.

  • Apply a framework to determine when to apply three focuses for coaching.

  • Identify potential solutions to challenges managers face when using a coaching approach.

  • Identified opportunities to develop coaching skills for managers.

Bio: 

John Bennett, Ph.D., PCC, BCC, is a business and behavioral science professor at the McColl School of Business, Queens University of Charlotte. He holds the Wayland H. Cato, Jr. Chair of Leadership. Dr. Bennett is the founding director of the university’s graduate programs in coaching. Dr. Bennett is president of Lawton Associates, an executive coaching and consulting firm specializing in helping individuals, teams, and organizations prepare for, excel through, and learn from change. He co-authored Coaching for Change (2014) and The Manager’s Guide to Coaching for Change (2024). He has written numerous articles about coaching and co-edited two issues of the proceedings for the International Coaching Federation’s (ICF) research symposium. Dr. Bennett was CEO of The Foundation for Coaching (a precursor to the Coaching Institute at Harvard). In addition to teaching and mentoring coaches, he has an active executive coaching practice. In addition, he has taught hundreds of graduate students and business leaders to use a coaching mindset and skills. Dr. Bennett was a founder of the Charlotte Area Chapter of ICF and served as president. He is a past president of the Graduate School Alliance for Educating Coaches. In 2010, he was named a Fellow of the Institute of Coaching and the Lewin Center. In 2020, he was recognized as one of the top 10 coaches in Charlotte. He earned an MPA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an MA and PhD in human and organizational systems from Fielding Graduate University.

    Parking (Free):

    Utilize parking deck on right/east side between Mal-Pan and Tou Les Jour and is labeled East Deck Parking Entrance

    Park anywhere starting on the 3rd floor and up. 

    Use elevators in the corner nearest Two Piedmont Town Center (south end).

    Cross at street level to get to Two Piedmont Town Center building.

    Parking is FREE.


    Meeting Space:

    Amwins is located in the Two Piedmont Town Center (right/east) building.

    Amwins name is listed on the marque in front of the building.

    Entrance is the double doors to the left of Del-Frisco’s steakhouse.  

    Once you have entered the building's lobby, go up to the 8th floor where you will see Amwins on the door.

    ATD Charlotte chapter meetings will be held in the Amwins Training Room located directly behind the break area with a large island at entrance.



    Registration:  5-6pm

    Meeting start time:  5:45pm

    Note:  for any guests attending (without a guest pass), please select 'Guest-In Person' for your registration; the cost is $20 to cover the meeting and food.

    We are looking forward to seeing you! Remember that in order to protect food costs and your membership dollars ATD charges a $20 no-show fee. So if something comes up please cancel by Monday 12noon before the meeting. Thanks!!!
